Virbac recently announced that it is voluntarily recalling six lots of Iverhart Plus Flavored Chewables due to efficacy concerns. According to PetMD, the heartworm preventive failed to meet stability specifications throughout the life of the product.

The stability concerns prompted Virbac to send a letter to veterinarians warning that the recalled lots might not offer full heartworm protection for dogs in the upper third of each weight range, PetMD reported.

Recalled lots include:

Dog sizeLot number
Large dogs (51-100 pounds)

Lot 120076
Lot 120086
Lot 120856

Medium dogs (26-50 pounds) Lot 120202
Small dogs (up to 25 pounds)

Lot 120196
Lot 120844

Consumers who have purchased one of the recalled products can contact Virbac at 800-338-3659, ext. 3052, Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Central Time.

It is not surprising that these recalls are happening with predictable frequency. Few years ago there was warning letter addressed to Virbac from FDA highlighting serious quality issues with this product. This was followed by a product recall few years later because of stability issues and now this recall of the product. This product is hard to administer, has very poor palatability compared to Heart Guard and I always wonder why people by this product from a manufacturer with ongoing quality issues. Virbac still markets a product called Aqua dent, a product that is not all effective in preventing plaque and tartar accumulation in dogs (and Virbac knew it all along) bit also be potentially toxic to dogs.
