FDA Eyes Safety of Pet Treats, Food
As media outlets cover new developments in the pet food recall that affected Menu Foods and several other manufacturers, safety of pet food - and its ingredients - is being carefully reviewed and publicized.
On March 30, 2007, Eight in One issued a voluntary recall of Dingo Chick'N Jerky treats, due to suspected Salmonella poisoning, according to a press release posted on the FDA site. "Laboratory testing has shown that some samples of these chicken jerky treats were contaminated with Salmonella. The company is recalling all these products out of an abundance of caution," according to the press release.
Seven days earlier, Petrapport voluntarily recalled pig ear dog treats because of the risk of Salmonella poisoning. "Laboratory testing has confirmed that samples of Full-Cut Pig Ears dog treats sold by BJ's Wholesale Club in 25-count packages under the Berkley & Jensen brand with no lot number and only the expiration advisory BEST IF USED BY 2009 (without referencing a specific month) were contaminated with Salmonella," according to the press release.
Last month, the FDA advised consumers not to feed Wild Kitty raw cat food to pets after Salmonella was detected during routine testing performed by the FDA, and the company recalled the product. Another well-publicized pet food recall occurred in December 2005, when Diamond Pet Foods initiated a voluntary recall after aflatoxin was discovered in its product.
